Chelsea are understood to have agreed on a temporary deal for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The Croatia international has been yearning for a fresh challenge since his return from the World Cup and it appears that his wish could be granted before the transfer deadline.
According to Goal.com, the Blues are said to have finalised terms over a season-long loan for Kovacic and they are pushing forward to include a buy-option which Los Blancos are understood to resist. Nevertheless, the midfielder appears likely to arrive on a temporary basis at the least with Maurizio Sarri previously expressing his desire to sign a new midfielder, who can provide ‘different characteristics’ to the current crop of players.
Aside from Kovacic, Chelsea are also pushing through an agreement to sign Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is expected to replace Thibaut Courtois. The west London giants have agreed on a world-record £71.6m for a goalkeeper to pursue the Spaniard but part of the sum is likely to be recouped with Courtois’ much-awaited switch to Real Madrid.
