Chelsea are reportedly on the cusp of signing Kepa Arrizabalaga after the Spanish goalkeeper terminated his contract with Athletic Bilbao. According to Sky Sports News, the 23-year-old has paid the £71m sum which would activate the buy-out clause written into his contract and this should pave the way for him to join the Blues before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Since the end of the World Cup, the Blues have had to deal with the uncertainty regarding Thibaut Courtois’ future but they have now decided to part ways with the Belgian – with Real Madrid the expected destination for the shot-stopper.
Arrizabalaga is scheduled to have a medical with the Blues on Thursday morning and provided everything goes as per plan, the Spaniard is set to become the club’s third recruit of the summer transfer window. He would also become the most-expensive keeper in the world ahead of Alisson Becker, who arrived at Liverpool from AS Roma in a deal worth £67m last month.
Meanwhile, the FA Cup holders could also make another signing before the transfer deadline with Mateo Kovacic being fancied to join the club. The Croatia international has largely been a bit-part player during his time at Real Madrid and he could now join the Blues on a season-long loan as part of the agreement which should witness Courtois’ permanent exit from Stamford Bridge.
