Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly urged the club’s hierarchy to secure deals for Toby Alderweireld and Mario Mandzukic before the closure of the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have already spent £70m on the likes of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant (free transfer) this summer and Metro claims that Mourinho now has a remaining budget of £90m to complete his transfer business.
As a result, the focus is mainly on bolstering the defence with another experienced centre-back and Metro reports that Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld is still the prime option on the club’s wishlist.
Spurs are currently said to value Alderweireld at £70m which is some £20m more than what United are willing to offer but Mourinho’s side are still optimistic of taking advantage of the Belgian’s contract situation.
Alderweireld has already turned down a contract worth £120,000-a-week at Spurs and his standoff in the coming weeks may tempt Spurs to lower their demands prior to the transfer deadline.
On the other hand, Juventus’ Mario Mandzukic has been identified as a probable option to strengthen the centre forward department whilst providing back-up to Romelu Lukaku.
The likes of Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are capable of slotting into the striker’s role but Mourinho is keen on pursuing the Croatian who offers a similar physical presence to Lukaku.
