Manchester United are reportedly prepared to step up their interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld this summer. The centre-back has been reluctant to extend his Spurs stay beyond the summer of 2019 and the club are expected to offload his services this summer.
According to The Sun, Jose Mourinho’s side are readying a £50m for the Belgium international as they seek to reinforce their central defensive options during the summer. Over the past few months, the versatile defender has failed to convince Spurs to offer him a 100 per cent increase on his £50,000-a-week wages but United are supposedly willing to provide with a much better salary package upon his Old Trafford move.
Alderweireld is currently with the Belgium national side for their friendlies prior to the summer World Cup but any deal could potentially be sorted out prior to the global tournament. Aside from Alderweireld, United are making good progress in the pursuit of Porto defender Diogo Dalot for whom they have already triggered a £17.5m release clause on his contract.
The Portuguese is due to become a United player sooner rather than later and there are suggestions that he could have a medical scheduled for the weekend prior to an official announcement. The 19-year-old is capable of playing in both the right and left-back positions and he could be seen as a long-term successor to one of Antonio Valencia or Ashley Young.
