Arsenal are reportedly close to completing their first signing under new manager Unai Emery. The Gunners have been pushing for new recruits since the close of the campaign and they could announce their first signing in the next couple of days.
According to Evening Standard, the north Londoners are nearing an agreement for Stephan Lichtsteiner, who is available on a free following the expire of his Juventus contract next month. It is added that the experienced Swiss has already paid a visit to the Gunners’ training ground and a deal could be finalised in the near future.
At 34, the Swiss international may not be the signing fantasized by most of the Gunners faithful but the right-back offers valuable experience and leadership qualities which have been absent at the club in recent years.
Laurent Koscielny is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the year with a serious Achilles problem and Lichtsteiner could emerge as a probable contender for the captaincy albeit on a short-term basis.
Hector Bellerin is presently the club’s preferred choice on the right side of the defence but the club could do with someone with the experience of Lichtsteiner, who can groom the Spaniard into a better footballer defensively.
