Manchester United are reportedly deemed favourites to secure the services of midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk this summer. The Brazil international has attracted interest from both United and Manchester City in recent months but the latter have now pulled out of the race with Pep Guardiola leaning towards a deal for Napoli’s Jorginho.
According to UOL Esporte via Metro, the Citizens have ended their pursuit of the former Internacional man, thereby given United a clear route to the midfielder’s signature. However, Shakhtar are still keen on settling for the player’s release clause which stands at £53m, and this could prolong the discussions for the next couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, Fred has recently suggested that he may not resolve his future until after the summer World Cup and United may have to wait until then, even if they manage to agree upon a transfer fee with the Ukrainian giants.
United manager Jose Mourinho has already highlighted that the club will recruit a replacement for the retiring Michael Carrick but they are likely to spend on a second central midfielder as well, should Marouane Fellaini leave Old Trafford on a free transfer.
