Chelsea are reportedly plotting a surprise attempt to sign Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld at the end of the season. The Belgium international has just 14 months left on his existing deal though Spurs have the option of a 12-month extension with a release clause.
According to The Sun, the Blues could test Spurs’ resolve with a £45m bid for Alderweireld who has sparingly been used during the backend of the campaign. The Belgian has found himself behind Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in the pecking order since recovering from a hamstring problem and he appears likely to pursue a fresh challenge unless his situation changes.
Aside from the Blues, Manchester United are also understood to be keeping tabs on the former Atletico Madrid man, who has been reluctant to extend his Spurs contract. Mauricio Pochettino’s side can extend Alderweireld’s deal for another year next term but that would include a relatively cheap release clause of £25m which would be active for a period of 14 days.
